07 Jun ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ Not Just Another 10 Letter Word
The word “impossible” is a hard word to comprehend. It can mean different things to different people and doesn’t even exist in the vocabularies of the greats. But for most of us, these 10 letters don’t just create a word, yet, a loss of hope; a cold denial or a heart-wrenching rejection. In contrast, the aforementioned group of determined and motivated individuals see the word “impossible” as simply a synonym for “challenge”.
Everyone reacts differently when they’re told they’re not good enough or that they can’t do what they desire. Whether the rejection is regarding finances, a struggling marriage, or an illness that’s winning – the strongest beings are wired to believe that somehow, someway, something can be done to beat the odds. Unfortunately, under the thin veneer of stoicism is a ball of terror that dwells deep within their gut. For the determined, this fear fuels their drive to succeed – they thrive on it. I used to be one of these people.
Here’s the cliff note. I was young, dumb and extremely prone to making the worst decisions possible. I went through bankruptcies, divorce, a career-ending injury and losses of some of the most important people in my life. Before it all hit the fan, my entire being, my entire mantra, was based on hope. With hope and perseverance, I could achieve anything. This was my mindset and it lasted from the moment I opened my eyes in the morning to the second I began to dream at night. If I had an aspiration, I merely had to believe it so and the opportunity would present itself. I was a naïve fool with a beautiful soul. Nothing could keep me from dreaming – nothing that is, but life – and boy did life hit me hard.
Yes, I’m older now and have had my fair share of beatings, but I’m proud to say I’m still following my dreams. I have the distinct honor of writing for a beautifully loyal following and have met so many wonderful people along the way. Although my chances of becoming a James Patterson level writer are slim, I refuse to believe they’re impossible – and I’ll keep working on it until I prove this belief to be true.
My hope has been damaged, stolen, crushed and belittled over the years; and yet the passion I have for the written word trumps any and every obstacle that will ever come my way. Being a writer is what drives me, no matter how many times I’m told I’m not “good enough”.
If you have a dream, a yearning in your soul to accomplish something or be someone: follow it until it’s yours. It will be hard and I assure you that there will be moments when you’re knocked down and want nothing more than to give up; when these times present themselves, remember one thing: every great person sat in that very seat of disappointment, but what differentiates the weak from the strong is whether or not you stand back up.
Taking the difficult road may be scary and it might not always lead us to where we expected, but it’s brave and fulfilling. Sure, you may fail – heck, I’m fluent in failure – but that’s okay. What’s important is that you tried and that you keep trying! Never stop fighting for what you believe in, never let your dreams die, and never let someone tell you that you’re not good enough. Instead, use that fear and negativity as motivation to push you harder and get what’s yours! You’ll be glad you did. You’ll have achieved the impossible.
Let’s talk again soon, I’ll bring the coffee. -R.
